For most three-season trips, a day of backpacking food weighs between 1.5 and 2.5 pounds. That range is not a guess. It falls out of two numbers: how many calories a day on trail costs you, and how many calories each ounce in your food bag carries. Pin those down and pack weight stops being a mystery.
Start with calories, not pounds
Pounds are the output. Calories are the input. Body size sets the baseline, mileage stacks on top of it, and elevation gain piles on again. A moderate day on trail lands somewhere around 3,000 to 3,500 calories. Big-mile days with real climbing push past 4,000, and cold weather raises the bill further, because staying warm is work your body pays for in food.
Most hikers never run this number and pack by feel instead, which is how a food bag ends up two pounds heavy or, worse, a day short. An honest estimate beats a precise-looking wrong one.
The division that sets your pack weight
Daily calories divided by food density equals ounces carried. That is the entire trick.
Say tomorrow needs about 3,500 calories. A food bag averaging 120 calories per ounce covers that in roughly 29 ounces, just under 2 pounds. Drop the average to 100 calories per ounce and the same day costs about 35 ounces, well over 2 pounds. Same calories, same hunger, well over a third of a pound of difference, and it repeats every day of the trip.

What a real food bag averages
A typical mixed bag of bars, tortillas, dinners, and snacks settles around 110 to 130 calories per ounce. Watery food drags the average down fast: fresh fruit, pouched wet meals, and anything canned sit well under 100. A deliberately dense bag, heavy on nuts, nut butters, oils, and dry dinners, can hold 125 or better without eating like a survival exercise.
The enemy is water weight. Dried food makes you carry the calories. Wet food makes you carry the water your next stream would have handed you for free.
Multi-day math
Multiply by nights out and the numbers get serious. Five days at 2 pounds a day is 10 pounds of food leaving the trailhead, on top of gear and water. That is also why density pays more the longer the trip runs: that daily gap adds up to close to 2 pounds off a five-day carry.
Past roughly 2.5 pounds per day, something in the plan usually wants attention. Either the calorie target is genuinely huge, think alpine cold or marathon mileage, or the bag is hauling water weight it does not need.
When the rule of thumb breaks
Short trips barely need the math: an overnight can absorb a heavy food bag and nobody suffers much for it. The math starts to matter around three days, when food becomes the heaviest consumable in the pack, and it matters most on cold trips, where calorie targets climb at exactly the moment appetite gets lazy.
Appetite is the quiet variable. Most hikers cannot eat 4,000 calories of anything on day one, and by day four they can eat anything that stands still. Pack the early days lighter and the later days denser and the bag matches the hiker instead of the spreadsheet.
Cutting weight without cutting calories
Trade wet for dry first: dried fruit over fresh, dehydrated dinners over retort pouches. Then add fat, the densest calorie there is. A pour of olive oil into dinner or nut butter on everything raises the bag's average without adding bulk.
